START WITH THE CONCERN
What can dermal fillers improve?
Dermal fillers are injectable gels used to add volume and soften selected facial folds or contours. Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a substance naturally present in the body; injectable HA formulations differ from the serums you apply to your skin. The treatment is a medical procedure, with benefits, limitations, and risks.
Volume & proportion
You may be looking for fuller lips, more balanced cheek contours, or a change in chin projection. The useful question is which adjustment would support your facial proportions—and how much change you actually want.
Lines & facial contours
Some lines relate to volume changes; others reflect movement or skin quality. We evaluate the cause before choosing a tool. A visible fold is not automatically a reason to place filler directly into that fold.
Filler has limits. It cannot reproduce a surgical facelift or remove significant excess skin. If your primary concern is redness, dark spots, or surface texture, we may discuss skin-focused care instead. Adding volume is not the answer to every sign of aging.
A PLAN FOR THE WHOLE FACE
Facial balancing begins with what you want to preserve
A natural-looking goal should be specific. Do you want better lip definition, a softer facial transition, or a more balanced profile? Do you want a subtle change that feels familiar, or a more noticeable enhancement? Explaining that preference is more useful than arriving with a predetermined syringe count.
At Bella Derma, we consider the relationship between your lips, cheeks, chin, and lower face rather than treating each feature as an isolated purchase. We discuss priorities, realistic limits, and whether a staged approach fits your goals and budget. A consultation may also lead to a recommendation to wait, use another treatment, or seek a specialist.
Define the goal
Tell us what bothers you and what you like about your current appearance. Bring questions and describe the degree of change you would feel comfortable with.
Choose the sequence
Discuss what to address first, what can wait, and when the result should be reassessed. A thoughtful plan gives each decision a purpose.
TREATMENT AREAS AT BELLA DERMA
Dermal filler options for lips, cheeks, chin & jawline
These are areas we discuss in individualized treatment planning. Suitability, product choice, and placement vary by patient; a treatment listed here is not a recommendation for every face.
Lip filler
Lip treatment may focus on shape, border definition, proportion, or volume. Your existing lip structure and desired degree of enhancement guide the discussion. A photo can help communicate a preference, but another person’s lips are not a guaranteed achievable outcome.
Cheek filler
Cheek treatment may address selected volume changes or contour goals. We evaluate the midface in relation to the lower face and your existing features. The objective is an appropriate adjustment, with realistic expectations about what added volume can accomplish.
Chin filler
Chin treatment may be considered when projection or proportion is part of your concern. We discuss the profile and the relationship between the chin and lips, along with the limits of an injectable approach. Filler does not change your underlying bite.
Jawline filler
Jawline contouring focuses on selected definition and proportion goals. A wider-looking lower face can have several causes. Adding filler differs from reducing masseter muscle activity or treating submental fat; the correct approach begins with understanding the concern.
Smile lines & facial folds
Nasolabial folds run from the sides of the nose toward the mouth; marionette lines extend below the mouth corners. We discuss whether filler fits the concern, what degree of softening is realistic, and whether related facial proportions should also be considered.
Several areas, one thoughtful plan
Some patients want to discuss more than one feature. That does not mean each area should be treated at the same visit. We prioritize the changes most relevant to your goal and explain the reasoning behind the proposed plan.
DIFFERENT CONCERNS, DIFFERENT TOOLS
Dermal filler vs. Botox: which fits your goal?
Filler adds volume. Botox® and Xeomin® change targeted muscle activity. They serve different purposes, so the choice depends on the reason a feature or line concerns you.
For example, jawline contouring with filler and masseter treatment aim at different changes. A consultation helps distinguish contour, muscle prominence, fat, and skin concerns before recommending an approach.

UNDERSTANDING THE PRODUCT
Hyaluronic acid fillers are not interchangeable
HA fillers are formulated for different treatment goals. A product used for a particular facial contour may differ from one selected for the lips. Brand recognition alone does not tell you whether a formulation suits your anatomy or the intended placement.
During consultation, ask which product is proposed, why it fits the treatment area, and what its patient labeling says about expected duration and risks. FDA approval applies to particular products and indications; it is not blanket approval for every injection site. If a proposed use is off-label, ask what that means for your decision.
Product choice
Understand the exact formulation being recommended rather than choosing only by brand name. Ask how its characteristics fit your goal.
Amount & placement
A syringe is a unit of product, not a treatment plan. Discuss where product would be placed, how much is proposed, and the expected total cost.
Learn more about the different categories of dermal fillers. We discuss the specific option suitable for you during consultation.
YOUR CONSULTATION
What May needs to know before recommending filler
Your medical and treatment history helps shape the discussion. Bring the names of previous injectable products, the dates and areas treated, and information about any prior reactions. If you do not know what was used, tell us rather than guessing.
Be ready to discuss medications and supplements, allergies, health conditions, prior facial surgery, and other aesthetic procedures. Share your goals, budget, upcoming events, and concerns about looking overdone. Ask how existing filler may affect a new plan.
Questions worth bringing
- What is causing the concern I see, and is filler the best option?
- Which product and treatment areas do you recommend, and why?
- What change is realistic for my anatomy?
- How much product is proposed, and what is the total estimate?
- What recovery should I plan for, and when should we reassess?
- How do I reach the practice if I have a concern afterward?
THE APPOINTMENT
What happens during dermal filler treatment?
An appointment includes more than the injections. Assessment, questions, consent, preparation, treatment, and aftercare all deserve time. Duration depends on the areas involved and the complexity of your plan.
1. Assess & plan
Your provider evaluates the face and proposed treatment areas, discusses the approach, and may document baseline photographs.
2. Prepare & treat
The skin is cleansed and comfort measures are discussed. Treatment uses a needle or cannula, depending on the plan. You may feel a pinch, pressure, or tenderness; numbing does not guarantee a painless experience.
3. Review & explain aftercare
Before you leave, discuss what to expect, how to care for the area, and which symptoms need prompt medical attention. Make sure you know how to ask follow-up questions.
SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS
Visible change now. A result to reassess after healing.
HA filler can produce a visible change at treatment, but the immediate appearance includes swelling and may not represent the settled result. Avoid judging a treatment solely by a same-day photo.
Immediately afterward
The area may appear fuller than expected. Early redness, tenderness, or bruising can affect how the result looks.
As recovery progresses
Swelling and bruising can take days to weeks to resolve. Ask when your particular treatment should be reassessed and what changes warrant a call sooner.
Temporary fillers have different durations. The formulation, treatment area, and individual response matter, so a single longevity promise is not useful for every patient. Discuss the expected range for the exact product and plan maintenance around reassessment rather than an automatic refill schedule. See the ASPS guidance on filler results.
PLAN AHEAD
Recovery & aftercare for dermal fillers
Returning to routine activities and looking ready for an important event are different questions. Some patients feel comfortable resuming their day, while visible swelling or bruising still affects plans. Build recovery time into your schedule.
Before your visit
Provide your medication and supplement list. Do not stop a prescribed medication on your own to reduce bruising. Tell the team about recent illness, dental procedures, planned treatments, and important upcoming events.
After treatment
Follow the instructions specific to your product and treatment areas. Ask about exercise, heat, makeup, pressure, and other skin treatments. Do not massage or manipulate the treated areas unless your provider directs you to do so.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons generally advises avoiding intense physical activity for the first 24–48 hours, with the individual recovery plan discussed before treatment. Read its dermal filler recovery guidance. Your provider’s instructions should address your own plan.
Planning for a wedding, photoshoot, or travel?
Tell us the date before booking. A first treatment immediately before an important occasion leaves little room to assess the result or manage an unexpected issue. Discuss a timeline that allows recovery and follow-up.
KNOW THE INVESTMENT
What affects dermal filler cost in Reno?
The meaningful comparison is the proposed treatment and total estimate—not the price of a syringe alone. Product choice, amount, treatment areas, and whether the plan involves more than one visit can affect cost.
Ask for a clear estimate
Request the product name, proposed amount, treatment areas, and total price before proceeding. Ask what follow-up is included and whether additional treatment would carry a separate charge.
Set priorities with your budget
Tell us your comfortable budget at consultation. We can discuss priorities and whether staging the plan makes sense. A budget conversation should clarify choices, not pressure you into treating more areas.
SUITABILITY COMES FIRST
When filler should wait—or another option fits better
Tell your provider about pregnancy or breastfeeding, active infection or inflammation near a proposed treatment area, bleeding disorders, significant allergies, and previous filler complications. These can affect suitability or timing. Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established.
If you mainly want to address skin tone, texture, or significant laxity, begin with a discussion of alternatives. We may consider Aerolase skin rejuvenation, microneedling, or PRX Derm Perfexion for appropriate skin concerns. Some goals need a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

AN INFORMED DECISION
Filler safety: what patients should understand
Swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness can occur. Less common problems include infection, persistent lumps, and inflammatory reactions. Rare injection into a blood vessel can cause tissue damage, vision loss, or stroke. Choosing an experienced licensed provider matters; no technique eliminates all risk.
Discuss the risks of the specific product and injection sites, alternatives, and the response plan for complications. Read the FDA’s dermal filler patient guidance and ask for the product’s patient labeling.
Symptoms that need immediate medical attention
Unusual or worsening pain, skin turning white, gray, or blue, or any vision change needs immediate medical attention. Call 911 for vision changes, stroke symptoms, or trouble breathing; notify your treating provider as well. Do not wait for a routine follow-up or an online message response.
For other concerns, such as increasing redness, fever, or a new persistent lump, contact your provider promptly. The Cleveland Clinic filler overview also explains potential complications.

LOOK BEYOND A SAME-DAY PHOTO
How to evaluate dermal filler before & after photos
Before-and-after images can help you describe a goal, but they cannot predict your individual outcome. Compare photographs thoughtfully and ask what actually changed.
Compare like with like
Look for similar lighting, head position, facial expression, and camera distance. Ask whether makeup, image editing, or other procedures could influence the appearance.
Ask about the treatment & timing
Which areas and products were used? How much time passed before the after photo? Was swelling still present? Was filler the only procedure, or part of a broader plan?
A helpful result discussion should connect the images to anatomy, treatment details, and realistic expectations. The illustrative photographs on this page are not presented as Bella Derma patient outcomes.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Dermal filler FAQs
The goal should be discussed before treatment. Tell May how subtle or noticeable a change you want, what you wish to preserve, and what would feel like too much. Product, amount, placement, and your starting anatomy all belong in that discussion; natural-looking results cannot be guaranteed.
There is no reliable universal number. The amount depends on the proposed areas, your anatomy, existing filler, and the desired change. Ask for an individualized estimate and an explanation of how the amount relates to the goal.
Duration varies by product, placement, and patient. Ask about the exact formulation’s expected range. Maintenance should follow an assessment of the result and your current goals rather than an assumption that the same amount is always needed.
HA filler can create a visible change at treatment. Early swelling can exaggerate fullness, so the same-day appearance should not be treated as the final result. Ask when to reassess your treatment.
Some HA filler can be reduced with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Dissolving is a medical treatment with its own risks and limitations; it is not a guarantee of instantly reversing an outcome. Not all filler materials can be removed this way. Read ASPS guidance on dissolving filler.
No. Filler adds volume, while Botox and Xeomin change targeted muscle activity. The appropriate choice depends on what is causing the concern. They should not be treated as interchangeable products.
Filler can change selected contours, but it cannot provide the same result as surgery or remove substantial excess skin. If laxity is your main concern, ask whether another approach or a surgical consultation would be more appropriate.
Begin with an assessment. Bring product names, treatment dates, areas treated, and any records you have. Explain previous reactions or dissatisfaction. Existing filler can influence the next plan; adding more is not an automatic recommendation.
If several treatments are being considered, discuss their suitability and timing together. Do not assume they should happen on the same day. Our treatment-sequencing guide explains the questions to discuss when building a broader plan.
Men can discuss facial filler goals, including selected contour and proportion concerns. The plan should reflect individual anatomy and preferences rather than a standard template based on gender.
This page focuses on lips, cheeks, facial lines, chin, and jawline. If your concern involves another area, ask at consultation about suitability and whether treatment or referral is appropriate. A concern appearing in a generic filler guide does not mean every practice treats it.
