A CLEAR STARTING POINT
A peel plan should fit your skin and your life
Brighter, smoother-looking skin starts with choosing an appropriate treatment. At Bella Derma, we consider your main concern, skin tone, current skin condition, previous reactions, and the time you can set aside for recovery.
Three SkinMedica options
Illuminize, Vitalize, and Rejuvenize give us different approaches to visible skin imperfections. Your starting point is selected through assessment.
A defined treatment goal
We discuss whether you want a gentle refresh, more even tone, smoother surface texture, or a plan for several concerns.
A realistic recovery plan
Visible flaking, redness, and product restrictions vary by peel and by person. Know what to expect before choosing your appointment date.

OUR CHEMICAL PEEL OPTIONS
SkinMedica chemical peels in Reno
Bella Derma offers SkinMedica® Illuminize Peel®, Vitalize Peel®, and Rejuvenize Peel™. These are professional peels with different levels of exfoliation and different treatment goals. The strongest option is not automatically the best first treatment.
Illuminize · a gentle refresh
$225 retail · $202.50 when booked online
Save 10% with online booking · 30-minute appointment
SkinMedica’s lightest peel is aimed at mild visible imperfections and a brighter, more radiant appearance. It can be a starting option for an appropriate first-time peel patient.
Peeling expectations: substantial visible peeling is generally not expected. Mild redness, dryness, or occasional flaking can still occur.
Vitalize · tone and texture
$275 retail · $247.50 when booked online
Save 10% with online booking · 30-minute appointment
Vitalize is designed for mild to moderate visible imperfections, including uneven tone and texture and the appearance of fine lines.
Peeling expectations: plan for the possibility of visible flaking over several days. Your response and care instructions guide your schedule.
Rejuvenize · a more intensive option
$325 retail · $292.50 when booked online
Save 10% with online booking · 30-minute appointment
Rejuvenize addresses more pronounced visible imperfections and provides greater exfoliation than Vitalize. Previous peel tolerance, skin tone, and pigment history deserve particular attention.
Peeling expectations: visible shedding and sensitivity may affect social plans. Suitability matters more than choosing by strength alone.
Choose with a provider
Tell us what bothers you most and what your week looks like. We will explain the recommended peel, why it fits, what it can reasonably improve, and when a different treatment or medical evaluation would be more appropriate.
Important distinction: these SkinMedica options should not be confused with a deep phenol peel. Deep resurfacing is a separate medical procedure with substantially different risks and recovery.
HOW PEELS WORK
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel uses a professionally selected solution to exfoliate skin at a controlled depth. As the treated surface renews, the skin can look smoother and more even. Formulation, application, and your skin’s response all matter.
Visible peeling is only one part of the experience. A gentle treatment can be useful without dramatic shedding, while a peel that causes extensive flaking does not automatically produce the right outcome for your concern.
Start with the concern
“My skin looks dull” and “I have indented acne scars” lead to different conversations. We clarify the problem before choosing a peel or another approach.
Plan the whole course
Preparation, the treatment itself, recovery care, and reassessment work together. The appointment is one part of a longer skin-care plan.
TREATMENT GOALS
What can chemical peels help improve?
An appropriate peel may improve selected surface concerns. The goal is a visible change that makes sense for your skin, rather than a promise to correct every sign of aging in one visit.
Dullness and rough texture
Surface renewal can help the complexion look fresher and feel smoother. When dryness is mainly a barrier problem, we may recommend supportive care before exfoliation.
Uneven tone and sun-related discoloration
Some pigment concerns respond to a peel, but the type of discoloration must be assessed. A new, changing, bleeding, or unusual spot needs medical evaluation first.
Fine surface lines
Peels can soften the appearance of selected fine lines. They do not replace treatment for volume loss, deep folds, or significant skin laxity.
Selected acne concerns
Certain peels can play a role in an acne plan. Persistent inflammation, painful nodules, or breakouts that are leaving scars may require medical acne care and a broader strategy.
Post-acne discoloration
A flat dark mark left after a breakout differs from an indentation. We consider pigment risk and ongoing acne before choosing how to address the mark.
A smoother overall appearance
A series may be more useful than one ambitious session. We define the areas and improvements you want to evaluate so progress has a clear meaning.
PIGMENT NEEDS A PLAN
Dark spots, melasma, and acne marks are different
Brown patches can have different causes. Melasma is often recurrent and may need prescription treatment, trigger management, and sustained sun protection. A chemical peel can be one part of a carefully chosen plan; it is not a cure for the underlying tendency to make pigment.
Assess before escalating
Tell us how the discoloration started, whether it changes with the sun or hormones, and whether previous products or procedures made it worse. These details help determine whether exfoliation fits.
Protect the improvement
Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, shade, and protective clothing support pigment care. For melasma, a tinted sunscreen with iron oxide may also be helpful against visible light.
Explore our guides to stubborn dark spots, sun spots versus melasma, and acne scars versus acne marks.
UNDERSTANDING PEEL DEPTH
Light, medium, and deep peels: what changes?
Peel depth describes how far the treatment acts in the skin. It influences healing, risk, and follow-up. This is general education about peel categories, rather than a menu of procedures offered at Bella Derma.
Light or superficial peels
These focus on the outer skin layers. Recovery is usually shorter, although irritation or flaking can still be visible. A course of treatments may be considered for gradual improvement.
Medium-depth peels
These reach farther and commonly involve more pronounced redness, peeling, and recovery. General healing estimates are often around seven to fourteen days, with redness sometimes lasting longer.
Deep peels
Deep resurfacing requires specialist medical planning and monitoring. Healing can take weeks, with prolonged redness. A deep phenol peel is not a routine repeat treatment every few months.
Depth is not a contest
A more aggressive procedure can create more recovery and more risk without addressing the right problem. We help you consider an appropriate next step and referral when needed.
CANDIDACY
Is a chemical peel a good fit for you?
You may be a candidate if you have a concern a peel can reasonably improve, your skin is ready, and you can follow the care plan. The assessment includes more than whether your complexion looks oily, dry, or sensitive.
Share your medical and treatment history
Discuss medications, isotretinoin use, allergies, past peel reactions, scarring tendencies, cold sores, and recent cosmetic procedures. Include over-the-counter products and supplements.
Show us your current routine
Bring retinoids, exfoliating acids, acne treatments, and other active products—or photographs of their labels. Products that seem gentle to you may change treatment tolerance.
Know when to wait
Sunburn, open wounds, active cold sores, dermatitis, or a significant inflammatory flare can make a peel inappropriate. We may recommend treating or calming the condition first.
Discuss pregnancy and breastfeeding
Tell us if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy. SkinMedica peel guidance excludes pregnant and lactating patients; we can discuss other appropriate skin-care options.
SKIN TONE AND SENSITIVITY
Chemical peels for darker skin: careful selection matters
Darker skin can benefit from appropriately selected peels, but treatment-related pigment change deserves careful attention. Your history of dark marks, melasma, irritation, and previous procedures helps shape the recommendation.
Match the peel to your pigment history
We consider both your natural complexion and your actual past reactions. Rejuvenize requires a particularly thoughtful suitability assessment; it should not be treated as an automatic upgrade from Vitalize.
Respect the skin’s condition today
A recent tan, active irritation, or a weakened barrier can change the plan even when you previously tolerated a peel. Share changes since your last appointment, including new medications or products.
THE CONSULTATION
What we discuss before choosing your peel
A useful consultation should leave you able to describe the plan in plain language. You should understand what we recommend and why, before agreeing to a treatment or series.
01 · Define the priority
Choose the concern that matters most: radiance, tone, surface texture, or a combination. Discuss what improvement would feel worthwhile to you.
02 · Review suitability
Assess skin readiness, medical history, product use, and prior reactions. Identify reasons to modify the plan, defer treatment, or seek another evaluation.
03 · Match your schedule
Discuss your work, exercise, travel, outdoor plans, and upcoming photographs or events. Expected visible recovery belongs in the decision.
04 · Clarify cost and follow-up
Confirm the peel, treatment area, anticipated visits, home-care needs, and reassessment plan. Ask which items are included in your quote.
BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT
How to prepare for a chemical peel
Follow the instructions for your selected peel rather than a generic online checklist. Some patients need preparation in advance; the safest timing depends on skin condition and the planned treatment.
Discuss active skin-care products
Ask when to pause and restart retinoids, exfoliating acids, benzoyl peroxide, scrubs, or other irritating products. Do not change prescription treatment without guidance.
Protect against sun exposure
Share recent tanning, sunburn, and outdoor travel plans. Maintain appropriate sun protection and let us know if the skin becomes irritated before your visit.
Coordinate hair removal and procedures
Tell us about waxing, depilatory creams, dermaplaning, laser treatments, microneedling, and injections. Their timing should be coordinated with your peel.
Plan the days afterward
Arrange a simple recovery routine and ask what you will need at home. If you cannot follow the instructions during an upcoming trip or event, discuss another date.
SEASONAL TREATMENT PLANNING
Why Cooler Months Can Be a Convenient Time for Chemical Peels
Fall and winter can be practical seasons for some patients to consider chemical peels because consistent sun protection is especially important before and after treatment. Seasonal routines, recent sun exposure, skin condition, and the depth of the peel all influence appropriate timing.
Cooler weather can sometimes make treatment planning easier, but the best time for a peel still depends on the individual patient. Bella Derma considers your current skin, recent sun exposure, outdoor plans, recovery window, and treatment goals before recommending a date.

YOUR TREATMENT VISIT
What happens during a chemical peel?
Your visit includes a review of the plan, skin preparation, professional application, and aftercare guidance. The application and finishing steps depend on the product used.
Review and prepare
We confirm changes to your history or routine and the intended treatment area. Skin is cleansed and prepared, with appropriate protection of sensitive areas.
Apply and observe
The selected peel is applied according to its professional protocol. Your provider observes the skin’s response rather than assuming every patient needs the same application.
Communicate about comfort
Tingling, warmth, or stinging can occur. Tell us promptly about intense or unexpected discomfort so the response can be assessed during treatment.
Leave with a care plan
Know when to wash, which products to use, what to avoid, and when to contact us. Confirm the next review or treatment timing before leaving.
DOWNTIME AND RECOVERY
Will my skin peel, and for how long?
Work downtime and visible recovery are different. You may feel well enough for normal activities while the complexion is still red, dry, or flaking. Your provider’s instructions take priority over a general timeline.
Illuminize recovery
Heavy shedding is generally not expected. Temporary redness or tightness may occur, and some patients experience minor flaking. A gentle peel still calls for appropriate skin care.
Vitalize and Rejuvenize recovery
Visible peeling often starts roughly two to three days after treatment and can continue for several days. The amount varies; plan room in your schedule rather than relying on an exact finish date.
An individual response
Skin condition, treatment history, and the protocol influence what you see. Your first peel provides useful information about tolerance for future planning.
Judge results after recovery
Early tightness or flaking is not the finished result. Evaluate tone and texture once the skin has settled, and discuss any concerns at reassessment.
AFTERCARE
Support the skin while it recovers
Use the written instructions for your peel. Keep the routine simple, handle the skin gently, and give us an opportunity to assess an unexpected reaction instead of trying additional exfoliation.
Cleanse and moisturize gently
Follow your washing schedule and recommended cleanser and moisturizer. Avoid scrubbing, cleansing brushes, picking, or pulling loose skin.
Follow sun-protection guidance
Use the sunscreen and protection plan you are given. Shade and hats matter alongside sunscreen, especially when you are planning outdoor activities.
Pause irritating products
Resume retinoids, acids, and other active products only when instructed. More exfoliation during recovery can add irritation rather than improve the result.
Coordinate exercise and treatments
Ask when to resume strenuous exercise, heat exposure, swimming, makeup, and other facial procedures. Feeling able to work does not mean every activity is appropriate yet.
RETINOIDS AND PEELS
Retinol after a peel: timing matters
Some professional peel protocols include a retinol step. That is different from adding your own retinoid serum to recovering skin at home. Product timing must fit the specific peel and your response.
A planned professional step
Your provider explains the products used during your peel. A step included in a selected protocol should not be generalized to every chemical peel treatment.
A guided return to your routine
Ask when your usual retinol, prescription retinoid, or Tretinol product should restart. Do not assume that applying it immediately afterward will accelerate results.
REACTIONS AND RISKS
What skin changes should prompt a call?
Peels can cause irritation, prolonged redness, pigment changes, infection or cold-sore reactivation, and, less commonly, scarring. Risk depends on the treatment, skin, and care plan; a superficial peel is not risk-free.
Contact Bella Derma promptly for significant or worsening pain, persistent burning, marked swelling, blistering, drainage, or an unexpected rash. New cold sores or troubling color changes also deserve assessment. Do not assume that a stronger reaction means the peel is working better.
For severe symptoms or concerns involving the eyes, seek urgent medical care. Our treatment planning includes knowing when another clinician or specialist should evaluate a concern.
RESULTS AND A SERIES
When will I see results from chemical peels?
A gentle peel may leave the skin looking refreshed relatively soon. With a peel that causes visible shedding, allow recovery before judging the change. Results depend on the concern, peel, skin response, and ongoing care.
One visit or a course
Some patients want a single refresh; others benefit from reassessment through a series. Define the goal and how progress will be evaluated before buying a package.
Spacing by peel and response
Common SkinMedica planning intervals are about two weeks for Illuminize, three to four for Vitalize, and four to six for Rejuvenize. These are reference ranges, not an automatic schedule.
Maintenance with a purpose
Skin continues to age and pigment triggers may persist. Maintenance should fit what is actually helping, your home care, tolerance, and budget.
Meaningful progress
Compare the concern you set out to address after the skin settles. If progress is limited or the problem is different from the original impression, reconsider the approach.
RENO LIFE AND EVENT PLANNING
Schedule your peel around real life
Your treatment date should make the care plan practical. Tell us about weddings, portraits, work presentations, ski days, Tahoe trips, and outdoor exercise before selecting a peel.
Allow a buffer before an event
Choose the date with expected recovery and your prior tolerance in mind. A first treatment close to an important event leaves less room to assess an unfamiliar response.
Plan for dry air and outdoor exposure
Build gentle skin care and sun protection into your routine. Wind, dry conditions, travel, and time outdoors can make it harder to follow a comfortable recovery plan.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT TREATMENT
Chemical peel or PRX Derm Perfexion?
Bella Derma offers both professional chemical peels and PRX treatments. They serve different roles in treatment planning. PRX is a topical skin-revitalization approach that WiQo positions separately from a traditional exfoliating peel.
Chemical peels
Consider a peel when selected surface renewal, tone, and texture concerns are the priority. The amount of visible recovery varies across Illuminize, Vitalize, and Rejuvenize.
PRX Derm Perfexion
PRX focuses on the appearance of skin quality, including firmness, elasticity, hydration, and radiance, with little visible downtime for many patients. Individual suitability still needs assessment.
Learn about PRX Derm Perfexion, PRX Plus, and PRX C at Bella Derma, or read our PRX, chemical peel, and microneedling comparison.
A BROADER SKIN PLAN
When another treatment may fit better
You do not need to decide on a peel before your consultation. We can discuss whether another approach better matches the concern, or whether treatments should be separated and reassessed over time.
Facials and barrier support
If the priority is comfort, hydration, or a supportive skin-care routine, a facial may be a more appropriate starting point.
Microneedling
Indented scars and certain texture concerns lead to a different conversation about remodeling. Explore microneedling when this matches your assessment.
Aerolase treatment
When redness, selected pigment concerns, or other laser-appropriate goals are central, discuss the role of Aerolase in your plan.
Acne care and medical referral
Active acne may need a structured care program, while suspicious lesions or a significant skin condition deserve medical evaluation. A cosmetic peel should not delay needed care.
Our approach: the right treatment, at the right time, in the right sequence. Read about planning the order of aesthetic treatments.
MEDICALLY GUIDED, PERSONALIZED CARE
May Belle Fellenz
APRN, MSN, FNP-BC
Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner
May is Bella Derma’s founder, owner, and lead medical aesthetics provider. Her approach emphasizes patient education, individualized assessment, and conservative treatment planning.
For chemical peels, that means understanding your concern, skin history, and treatment readiness, then explaining the options and next steps. When a concern calls for another type of care, appropriate referral belongs in the plan.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Chemical Peel FAQs
Bella Derma offers Illuminize, Vitalize, and Rejuvenize. We select the recommendation after discussing your concern, skin condition, history, and recovery preferences. You can ask about all three during a free consultation.
A first peel should establish an appropriate starting point. Illuminize may suit an eligible patient seeking a gentle refresh, while another option may better match a particular concern. We do not choose by strength alone.
Not necessarily. Illuminize generally does not cause substantial visible peeling. Vitalize and Rejuvenize may produce visible flaking or shedding, but the amount differs. Lack of dramatic peeling does not automatically mean the treatment failed.
Tingling, warmth, or stinging can occur, and comfort varies. Tell your provider promptly about intense or unexpected discomfort during the application. Significant or persistent burning afterward needs assessment rather than reassurance that it is normal.
Appropriately selected peels can be used for darker skin, but pigment changes are a concern. Your prior dark marks, melasma, irritation, and peel tolerance influence suitability. Every peel is not equally appropriate for every complexion.
A dark or red mark differs from an indented scar. Some superficial concerns may improve with an appropriate peel, while deeper structural scars may need another approach. We assess the type of change and any active acne first.
No. A peel may have a role in a broader pigment plan, but melasma can recur. Ongoing sun protection and appropriate medical treatment or referral may be necessary. More aggressive exfoliation is not automatically the answer.
It depends on your goal, the selected peel, and response. Some patients choose a single refresh; others consider a series with reassessment. Ask which change the proposed course is intended to produce and how progress will be judged.
Many superficial treatments allow a relatively quick return to ordinary activities. Visible redness or flaking may still affect how you feel about meetings or photographs. Discuss your schedule and the selected peel before booking.
Follow the instructions for your peel and skin response. Makeup, strenuous exercise, heat, and other activities may have different restrictions. Ask for specific guidance before scheduling a workout, event, or other facial treatment.
Restart only according to your post-peel instructions, after any required healing period. A professional retinol step in some peel protocols is different from applying your own serum at home. Do not add products to speed up peeling.
Sometimes a broader plan includes several treatments, but their order and timing need assessment. Tell us about planned or recent procedures, including those performed elsewhere. Do not assume that combining treatments on one day is appropriate.
SkinMedica peel guidance excludes pregnant and lactating patients. Tell us about pregnancy, breastfeeding, and pregnancy plans so we can discuss other suitable care with appropriate clinical guidance.
No. WiQo positions PRX as topical skin revitalization rather than a traditional exfoliating peel. Bella Derma offers both approaches, and we discuss which fits the goal, skin condition, and preferred recovery.
Do not treat a high-concentration chemical peel as an ordinary home exfoliant. The FDA warns that these products can cause serious burns, pigment changes, infection, and scars when used without appropriate professional supervision.
Yes. Bring your priorities, product list, medication and treatment history, and questions about timing or price. The consultation helps you understand whether a peel fits and which option would be appropriate.
